Current Update: April 6, 2010
With set construction on the Klingons nearing completion, and with Van and Ricky both involved with other projects for the week, I set about to finish up the props for the series.
For our phasers, I opted to use the Playmates Assault Phasers. We have three of these for our production, and they look quite realistic.

We originally considered making a cast of one phaser and making replicas from the pourable industrial plastics available today, but I wanted a touch more realism. The fact that all three of these phasers light up when firing was significant, and these three would be more than we would need. And if we end up needing more, then we'll consider making replicas.
For our communicators, we had some tough issues before us. Again, we considered sculpting a communicator out of modeling clay and making plastic copies, but one afternoon, Jeremy (my youngest) complained to me about how his Samsung cell phone had bitten the dust. While he was showing it to me (the screen had shorted out), I realized that it'd be ridiculous to actually make the communicators when I had one in my hand. A brief search on eBay brought me in 17 broken ones for 99c (that's for the lot--making them 6c each plus shipping of $15 or so). Throw in a $3 can of flat black spray paint, a few minutes time in CorelDraw, a little bit of vinyl sticker material, a few minutes with a ditto knife, and voila, a communicator that will do quite nicely. Our screen tests using it show that it's undistinguishable except in closeups. We're not planning on zooming in on the communicator in our first few episodes. :)
