Building the Bridge 6

Created: May 22, 2010

We've been busy, and we've got construction to the point where we're actually ready to paint the consoles!

On Saturday, May 15th, we met with Thomas Sasser who has come aboard to serve as the set graphic designer/set decorator for our production. Thomas' challenge is to make our graphics more realistic while moving from paper appliques to acrylic panels. Thomas will be working toward making the panels more practical as well as more uniform. Thomas will also be constructing "doo-dads" (signs, intercoms, independent panels, etc.) which will be positioned around the bridge. All of this should result in a greater realism for our production.

On Tuesday, May 18th, Van Buchanan, Randy Landers and Ricky Thompson got together and finished the framing of the last bridge "double" station (the Security & Tactical stations). It took the greater part of the evening to complete and get into place.

On Wedneday, May 19th, Randy and his daughter Kimberly put in the cross slats on the Security station. Because Randy's son Ryan and Ricky's son Nicholas were graduating on Friday night, work on the set came to a standstill.

However, on Saturday, Randy's father-in-law, Mike Marcusky, volunteered to lend a helping hand to the production.  Together, the two of them put in the cross slats on the Tactical station then attached the service board to both stations. They also worked on increasing the integrity of the other stations, and the results were quite nice!

Mike has had years of home improvement projects to draw upon.

Mike was interested in strengthening the stations.

Completing side by side stations was a challenge.

Hanging the overhead paneling was incredibly difficult.

Randy and Mike took turns sawing the service board.

The results were exactly what we were trying to achieve.

After the in-laws left, and with only occasional help from his daughter Kim and his youngest son, Jeremy, Randy set out to complete the front steps for the bridge and the captain's chair platform. The front step was very easy to do, and Randy had it finished before lunch.

But the captain's platform was perhaps the most challenging assembly we've undertaken. We had to mount the captain's chair (from a Toyota Celica which didn't survive a front end collision and ended up in the local junkyard/used auto parts dealer) onto an office chair swivel mount. Working in 105°F heat and 68% humidity were almost unbearable, and at one point, Randy and his wife decided to head to the local Lowes for some 3" screws and 2"x6"x10' boards and then to Sonic for a cherry slush. After that, Randy was able to complete the construction on the captain's platform.

The distance from the chair to the astrogator may need to be adjusted.

This week, we plan to paint the consoles black, install the arms and back on the captain's chair, and then begin work on the triangular lighted partitions that we had originally forsaken. Our new set decorator wants them installed to better simulate the design we see in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. We also need to begin work on the turbolifts and the mainviewer and get the carpet guy to come take some measurements.

Be sure and check back soon to see what's new!
